Where We Work

We work in Mosoriot Kenya in partnership with the local community to improve access to quality education for all children. We accept donations to support our work from people of good will from around the world. Together we can make a difference and make the world a better place.

Our work centers around helping rural and economically disadvantaged communities to develop and implement educational and economic programs to empower both youth and adults to transform their lives. This is done through building a school of excellence and a community learning center that will offer opportunity to the children to receive a good education, and for the community to continue with lifelong learning.

Our Plan of Operation

Our infrastructure development plan of operation comprises two phases: Phase one entails building the St. Clara Primary School in Mosoriot. Construction work began in November 2022 and is ongoing.  The goal is to provide primary level education starting from two years of pre-primary education and 6 years of primary education. By 2024 we will have a completed primary school projected to have a student population of about 240. The school will offer a good quality education with adequate resources to unlock the students’ full potential and prepare them well for opportunities ahead.

Phase two: Build a community learning center that will provide enrichment opportunities for adult members. They will also have access to resources such as a library with books and computers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the world around them, the issues affecting it, and the tools needed to be actively engaged in civic education and sustainable development. We view this as a very necessary component of our work because education and skills for life are particularly important in combating generational poverty and other challenges facing rural communities in developing countries. The community learning center construction will happen simultaneously with the construction of the school.

Rationale for Our Work

Many school-age children and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds do not have opportunities for a good education and for remaining in school until completion due to a variety of challenges. According to the 2016 UNESCO Report, 263 million children and youth globally are not attending school. The same report says that the highest number of children and youth not in school are living in Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, some children who are in school may not be learning and end up as school dropouts with no meaningful literacy and life skills to provide for themselves and contribute to society.

The goal of the Lelei Foundation is to improve opportunities for quality education for rural children. This is important because the knowledge and abilities that the youth acquire during their time in school should allow them to not only score a good grade on a test or finish a class project, but also provide them with skills to navigate a world, which is consistently more demanding of relevant knowledge and entrepreneurial talent.

The Lelei Foundation also recognizes the need for a community learning center, particularly in the process of rural transformation and exploring how formal, non-formal, and informal education are blended for capital formation, empowerment, and self-sufficiency of rural communities. Traditionally, schools have tended to be isolated from the communities. The curriculum often has little relevance to rural life, community involvement is mixed, and low levels of literacy and traditional attitudes and practices provide little support for the communities. Our goal is to engage both the school and the community in the process of learning, improvement, and sustainable development. The learning center will offer diverse programs such as early childhood care and development, second chance basic education for youth, literacy and post literacy programs, adult knowledge and skills enrichment programs, vocational skill development, income generating programs, and community programs aimed at improving the quality of life of rural people. The center will also offer assistance to the students of local schools in improving their academic achievement and to serve as a local institutional base offering technology-based open and distance learning opportunities to engage rural people in lifelong learning and civic education.
