About Us

The Lelei Foundation is committed to community development through working together at the grassroots level to provide children with a good education and have an impact in building stronger and more connected communities.

Our Motivation

We strongly believe that education is the backbone of a successful society and all children irrespective of their location or economic status should have the right, privilege, and opportunity to get the best education possible and to thrive. Education can be the catalyst needed to pull families and communities out of the cycle of poverty. Knowledge gives children the power to dream of a better future and the confidence needed to pursue a full education, which in turn will help generations to come. As Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". The Lelei Foundation is dedicated to transforming our rural communities through the power of education.

Who We Are

John Cothern and his wife Caroline Lelei-Cothern of San Diego, United States conceptually founded TLF in 2014. Their motivation stems from a desire to fulfill a dream and a love for education passed down from Mr. William Lelei, the family patriarch, and his wife Marcella Lelei the family matriarch. Mr and Mrs William Lelei generously donated seven acres of land from their farm in Mosoriot to the Lelei Foundation for the development of a community school and learning center. Their donation was inspired by their firm belief in the power of education to empower and transform lives and their desire to give back to the community. Although they themselves did not receive formal education as we know it today given the historical time they grew up in, in Kenya, they developed a deep love for formal education and learning and ensured that all of their children were educated. The Lelei‘s strongly believed that when the youth are given opportunities for a good education, they can create a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities. Mr. and Mrs William Lelei have devoted their humble lives to community service including fundraising for building schools, churches, and health centers in their communities. John and Caroline, through founding the Lelei Foundation, have dedicated to building on the Lelei dream and honoring their legacy. The Lelei Foundation is building the St. Clara School Mosoriot to fulfil the dream under the dedicated and able leadership of John and Caroline supported by a strong team of board members and dedicated donors who have donated and continue to donate to the foundation.

Our Mission

TLF’s mission is two-fold: (1) Provide children from disadvantaged economic backgrounds with opportunities to access quality education that will help them reach their full potential and enter society as full and productive citizens; and (2) provide a learning center that offers holistic lifelong learning and empowerment opportunities for members of the community to transform their lives and realize their potential through continuing education, skills development, and community social and economic interactions.

Our Vision

Our vision to empower youth from disadvantaged backgrounds is guided by our belief in equality of opportunity and commitment to quality education for all. Every child deserves the opportunity to receive a good education that will nurture their potential to grow into well-rounded, responsible adults equipped with the skills they will require to become economically productive, develop sustainable livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies, and enhance individual well-being as well as community and national development.
