Dr. Macrina C. Lelei trained as a teacher in her undergraduate education at Kenyatta University, Kenya. Upon graduation she joined the Teachers Service Commission as a High School teacher. She proceeded to pursue graduate education in the United Kingdom (University of Leeds), and in the United States (University of Pittsburgh) where she obtained both her Masters and Doctoral degrees. She is currently the Associate Director of the African Studies program, University Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.
In her research she explores the role of education in building communities and bringing about development at the grassroots. As part time faculty, she teaches courses on education and international development, and education in Africa. She is passionate about education and strongly believes in the power of education in transforming lives. She argues that every community has the responsibility to think about education as a fundamental human right and to provide all children opportunities for a good education to realize their full potential and become productive members of their societies. She is committed to the vision of the Lelei Foundation to enhance opportunities for education for rural youth and continuing education for the community members.
