Anna-Maria Karnes
Executive Board Member
Born in Cameroon, Anna-Maria Karnes is a passionate advocate for experiencing Africa first-hand. She has visited Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. She studied Spanish in Mexico and Costa Rica, and has lived in Brazil, Thailand, and Turkey. With a Masters in Applied Linguistics, she taught English as a Second Language for over 10 years. She is now pursuing a PhD at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Education specializing in international and comparative education. Her research focuses on higher education in Ethiopia, with emphasis on examining women’s education. She is interested in looking at education holistically, including formal and non-formal settings across the lifespan, and with a special emphasis on empowering women and girls to seek higher education. Anna-Maria is excited about serving in the Lelei Foundation board where she will bring her wealth of experience as a teacher and community engagement coordinator, and devotion to volunteering and working with young adults to make an impact.
